Breathing ENERGY BACK INTO YOUR LIFE!

January 13, 2010 by zomadic

Winter can be a stressful time – money worries,dull/cold weather. And this year even more so with all the snow, ice and freezing weather. Here’s a couple of breathing techniques to help beat those stressful moments and help you relax. In yoga, breathing practise or pranyama means control of life force. The life force is the breath! So consider that next time you breath in…each time you inhale, you bring energy into your body. And when you breath out, you’re getting rid of stale or negative energy stale air, tension, worry, fear..so consciously let it all go!

Try one or more of the following

1. The Balloon – Breath in through your nose filling your belly ‘like inflating a balloon’. Breath out through your nose and allow ‘the ballon’ to deflate. Once you get the hang of this, try counting your breath in the inhalation and exhalation. This will do wonders for centering you, calming you at stressful times and allowing your lungs to work more efficiently.
2. Cooling Breath – when you get ‘hot and bothered’ ( stuck in the car in a traffic for ages is my moment) breath in fast through your mouth with your mouth in an ‘o’ shape sort of like  a funnel or sucking through a straw. You will feel the air going in is cool. Then breath out slowly through your mouth. This is great for cooling you down and calming your nerves.

3. Complete breath or three part breath. This is a long inhalation – breath in expanding your belly, then your ribs, then your sternum ( upper chest). breath out in the opposite order. This increases your lung capacity. And brings a lot more energy into the body.

Try ten minutes a day of this- and after a few weeks see the difference in your mood, ability to deal with stress and general well-being! Let me know how it goes.

Best of both Worlds!

November 22, 2009 by zomadic

Thai Massage is absolutely amazing. For me, it reaches the parts other massage techniques simply can’t. Working the entire body energetically rather than just physically. Stretching the legs, spine in ways only things like yoga and gymnastics do but with only a fraction of the effort. So while i would choose Thai over Swedish massage every time,  i do miss that contact and lovely feeling being massaged with oils gives you.

Recently, Zomadic did a course with The school of Thai Yoga Massage using oils with Thai Massage. It was fantastic and i have returned a convert because Thai massage with oils is the best of both worlds. This way you get that little bit of pampering but with massage techniques that go deep into the body and are not at all ’surface’, as has been my experience of some swedish oil massages where its all very nice, but i’m thinking when are you going to get stuck in and do something! Of course this is all personal preference, but if like me, you like a strong, deep massage but still want that certain something oil on your back gives you, thai massage with oils is perfect!

For more information about courses run by the school of thai yoga massage contact Kira on 0845 0900211. Her courses are outstanding and Zomadic highly recommends! :)             www.thaiyogamassage.co.uk

Ignite – Phoenix Dance Theatre’s sell-out show !!

November 11, 2009 by zomadic

Zomadic went to see Phoenix Dance Theatre’s sell-out show on friday at the Riley Theatre in Leeds and what an amazing night it was- vibrant, athletic, breath-taking dancing that had you at the edge of your seat. This is a company full of inspiration talent and vitality. There were four dance pieces.

CLASS

The first was called Class  was originally choreographed by choreographer Darshan Singh Bhuller as a Graham-based technique demonstration, giving the audience an insight into the distinctive style of Phoenix. This was a great choice for an opener – we got to see beautiful technique and it was a glorious and enlivening homage to tradition.

1976

Second was 1976, a duet choreographed by Alesandra Seutin and danced beautifully by  Azzurra Ardovini and Amanda Lewis – both phenominal dancers. On 16 june 1976, when high school students in Soweto started protesting for better education, police responded with tear gas and live bullets. Based on the eminent photograph ‘The Soweto Uprising” ,Alessandro explores explores the journey that lead children to have been captured in such an outspoken image. I liked the way this was staged. It had a very interesting movement vocabulary, a  clear message and i liked the way the innoccence of the costumes contrasted the subject-matter.

Beast

Thirdly came Beast choreographed by Douglas Thorpe. As we walked back in after the interval for this piece loud rock music was blasing while the dancers just stood on stage in their opening positions. This was incredibly fresh and i just thought how appealing that was for contemporary dance. Beast looks at rage and the battle between the sides of the brain. What happens when rage takes hold ? was one of the questions this dance looked at. This pushed the dancers to extremes both physically and mentally and the movement quality, particuarly when danced by the slighter female dancers was very surprising because it was so aggressive and beast-like. It definitely did what it said on the tin! It was so physically demanding and just an eceptional performance from all 6 dancers.

Fast Lane

Finale was Fast Lane choreographed by Phoenix’s very talented artistic director Sharon Watson. This was fun, lively and i just really enjoyed watching this. And the dramatic fuschia lighting was great! When i think about the first performance of dance i ever saw at the age of thirteen which was by Phoenix, it was exactly this – people running and leaping across the stage looking brilliant and i thought , i want to be them. And i think that’s what this piece does!

Zomadic gives Ignite a thumbs up. If you ve never seen any contemporary dance this is the show that ll have you wanting to get up off your seat and leaping onto the stage.

Sorry you missed it? Catch Phoenix at Halifax in a couple of weeks. My advice is to book early to avoid disappointment!

Helping hands for pregnancy.

November 6, 2009 by zomadic

Pregnancy is one of the most challenging and life-changing time of a woman’s life. Everything is changing within the body: posture, body mass, energy flow…it is exciting joyous and not a little scary! And this is a time where a little hands on help such as reiki, reflexology and yoga can be a valuable tool! Here are just some of the reasons why:

Hormonal changes, gained weight, less room for digestion, increased blood flow, increased  hormone levels, changes in blood chemistry, CHANGE  stresss…..( aaaghhh).

Common symptoms: Nausea or ‘morning sickness’, oedema or water-retention, constipation, dizziness, tiredness, bleeding gums, groin pain, heart burn, leg cramps, mood swings. Complementary therapies, yoga and Pilates can help you manage these symptoms and do a whole lot more for your well-being.

Touch – a powerful tool

Have you noticed how nearly everyone you meet is compelled to touch your bump? A baby bump is intrinsically soothing to the human psyche. The power of touch is well documented – it makes us feel good, we ‘bloom’, improving our immune system and dulling pain responses. There are a number of techniques that use touch, here are three really useful ones we use at Zomadic.

Reflexology – an overview, benefits and self-help.

The feet are a mini map of the body and every reflex area on the foot relates to a part of the body including organs. The theory is that  Life force or ‘prana’ circulates in a balanced, rhythmic way throughout the body. If the energy is disrupted, signals are transmitted down the energy channels within the body and manifest as thickenings or tiny nodules that can feel like tiny grains of sand on the feet. Like acupuncture, reflexology has been used in china and India for over 5000 years. For pregnancy, reflexology is a powerful tool. It helps to identify areas in the body that are congested or need cleansing. It helps reduce and normalize high and low blood pressure, improve lymphatic drainage, prevent heartburn, clear pelvic congestion, aid digestion, oxygenate the baby by improving blood flow within the whole body, improve sleep quality, eliminate water retention, clear headaches, boost energy levels, improve and balance mood. This is something you can do to yourself or have a partner do to carry on the benefits gained from those given by your reflexologist. I would recommend you do the things which instinctively feel good and that you are drawn to from the reflexology sessions you have.

Reiki – healing hands, healing heart

Reiki is the laying of hands on key areas of the body. It is one of the safest treatments you can have in early pregnancy. Healing is happening on a subtle level including encouraging lymphocytes ( the immune sytem cells) into the affected area. In my experience it is really helpful in establishing a deeper connection and bond between mum and her unborn baby and the baby absolutely loves the treatments. It is very common that you will feel deeply relaxed in a treatment and possibly fall asleep. Reiki improves sleep quality, deepens muscle relaxation, balances energy levels, gives you a  feeling  of well-being, peace and calm thus reducing anxieties associated with pregnancy, being a mother and giving birth. Again you can help yourself and i would recommend that you do this to yourself and your bump. And here positive intention and connecting the laying of your hands to a peaceful breath is all important.

Pre/post natal Yoga – union of body and mind!

Yoga is the union of body and mind balancing prana or ‘life-force’ throughout the body system. A class or one – one yoga session would involve a number of  aspects including physical postures, breath work, relaxation and/or meditation. Doing yoga affects your energy, emotions and ways of dealing with the world as well as improving your physical body. Benefits of a pre/post-natal yoga class or one to one sessions is learning asanas and breathing techniques       ( pranyama) useful to you and avoiding of the many yogic positions which are not recommended during pregnancy. Breathing and mediatational techniques can be hugely beneficial in preparing for labour. And you can do these exercises at home as well.

Some of the Key Benefits of treatments of regular treatments:

Techniques to aid/prepare for the birth including pain relief, opening the pelvis, and relieving tension around the cervix and birth canal, health maintenance and improvement including strengthening and lengthening necessary muscles, improving circulation, and improving tone, calms the mind while relaxing the physical body. Help you achieve balance and enhance aspects of your life, reduces pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, water retention, mood swings, poor sleep patterns, balance and calms the body and mind, connect with your baby giving you time for yourself. And if you have other children you can involve them too!

Theta Healing and kebabs!

October 27, 2009 by zomadic

Zomadic  recently did a practitioner course in Theta Healing and thought it was absolutely amazing!!!! You can put down your cynicism, keep hold of your starbucks and still be enlightened!

I first heard about Theta from my reiki teacher when i was in thailand last summer, and i knew if she said it was good, it was going to be brilliant! And it was! I trained with Theta UK and with this very funny, warm-hearted guy called Errol….the one and only kebab eating guru! He kept us in stitches while still supporting our breakthroughs- how can i describe him…loves his food, a former restaurant manager, would be pop star ( he says), travelled the world twice over on the ships, been and done every healing technique from hypnotherapy to hawaian massage. It was, surprisingly, healing without a hint of that hippy new age feel…Errol has a kind ve down to earth charm that makes you feel that you can put down your cynicism, keep hold of your starbucks and and still be enlightened!! Who said life had to be hard?

The organisation Theta Healing UK are well managed and organised and give great value. The courses are run in a great location surrounded by wonderful restaurants!( A must i feel for the kebab food guru). They run basic/ advanced practitioner courses, teacher training courses (and thats just the start). They’re actually bringing the founder herself to london on 16th November 2009. I was particuarly impressed with their commitment and caring attitude- they re using this work to help people globally, working with refugees and plans to work with aids victims and set up a charity.

Results i feel lighter, more energised and just about ready for anything.  I feel its been a huge addition to my own personal well-being as well as improving my ability as a practitioner. I am definitely going to do the advanced and go on to train further because its such a brilliant technique and errol’ s the man to do it with!

About Theta healing

Founded by Vianna Stibal, ThetaHealing™ is a technique that teaches how to put to use our natural intuition, relying upon unconditional love of Creator Of All That Is to do the actual “work”. We believe by changing your brain wave cycle to include the “Theta” state, you can actually watch the Creator Of All That Is create instantaneous physical and emotional healing.

Upon learning the technique of ThetaHealing™, you will see that everyone has intuitive abilities that can be used to bring about spontaneous physical and emotional healing. Using this personal process, you will help yourself, as well as your friends and family.

ThetaHealing™ is designed by Vianna as a therapeutic self-help guide to develop the ability to change on all levels: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually using the Creator of all That Is. ThetaHealing™ is best known for the Belief and Feeling Work on all four levels; Core, Gene, History, and Soul. With growing scientific evidence that toxic emotion can contribute to disease and the awareness that emotions, feelings and the power of thought have a direct bearing upon our physical health, there is increasing interest in changing how the mind influences the body to create optimum health. Belief and Feeling Work empower people with the ability to remove and replace negative emotions, feelings and thoughts with positive, beneficial ones. ThetaHealing™ can be most easily described as an attainable miracle for your life.

ThetaHealing™ is also best known for the 7 Planes of Existence; a concept to connect to the Highest Level of Love and Energy of All That Is. Using this concept, the practitioner can achieve the highest clarity and wisdom love.

In 1995 Vianna Stibal a Naturopath, Massage Therapist, and Intuitive Reader at the time, discovered that the way she did Readings could do an instant healing. Vianna, a mother of three young children was diagnosed with cancer that was quickly destroying her right femur. Everything she had tried using conventional and alternative medicine had failed. Then she discovered that the simple technique she used in Readings could heal. Her leg was instantaneously healed. She added this knowledge of ThetaHealing™ to her sessions with clients and in the classes she was teaching. Curious to understand why the technique was working, Vianna solicited the help of a physicist and with an electrocephalograph discovered that the simple technique tapped Theta waves. Over many years of practicing the technique, Vianna believes the technique utilizes a Theta wave to achieve an instant healing. Through thousands of clients she discovered not only an amazing way to connect with the creative energy that moves in all things, but that this energy could change instantly Beliefs and Feelings that are linked to sickness.

Thai Yoga Massage for Dancers

October 9, 2009 by zomadic

I thought it might be helpful to make it a little clearer what a Thai Yoga Massage for dancers is and what you might get from the experience, which i am basing on what my clients have said as well as my own experiences. So for the rest of this blog, i am gong to talk to you like you are the client.

A thai massage is an energy treatment which works on your  whole body. It can be described as having yoga done to you and takes place on a soft futon mat on the floor. You do not need to take your clothes off but it is advisable that you wear comfortable loose clothing. A full massage lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and this description i based on treatments of these lengths. I have a dedicated room at my home where i work from as this is an ideal space for the treatment.

We usually start with an informal chat about what is involved in the massage, why you  have come and any specifics you want to get out of it. Then you lie down on your back and i begin working on the energy lines and pressure points that run through your feet, setting up a relaxing rhythm in the movement so that you can start to breathe more deeply, open up and begin to switch off.

Next i work on your legs, pressing and stretching deeply along the lines.  You may feel this specifically at the points i am pressing or you may feel it more generally through the energy lines. I might pay more attention to specific areas of tension that i come across or that you have mentioned as an issue. This part of the massage can be very strong but how deep is up to you, as i welcome your feedback on pressure. Deep is good so long as you can go with it and it is better to soften if the body is resisting the experience but the phrase ‘ no pain no gain’ is not a principle that applies here.

After the legs i work the pressure points in the stomach. This can feel very strange and sensation varies from person to person. This is a place we tend to hold a lot and releasing this tension can help relieve back pain, hip pain and give a general sense of opening through the body. It is good for the internal organs and generally opens the channels of all the energy lines and so you can feel very revitalised after.

Variations in order can occur here depending what i feel is best for you as an individual and length of treatment. I might work in side position, or do the back, or work  the arms, hands and shoulders. I will always finish with the head and face, balancing your energy and making sure any negative energy that has been moved, has also been transformed to positive. I always recommend that you stay lying down for a couple of minutes at the end of each session and drink plenty of water through that day. The experience will give your body information about what it needs and so some quiet time afterward can facilitate this listening so that you can maximise the benefit of the massage. This is not always possible but is a good thing to keep in mind.

What is it good for ?

This is a sensory experience –  music, candles, crystals, warm and tranquil atmosphere. This is an experience for your body and your mind. You can expect to relax deeply and gain insight into your body, how you are feeling and what areas need more attention. It can feel like a bit of a work out as muscles you have never stretched get stretched and parts of your body you didnt know existed get worked on. It will feel detailed and you are likely to (figuratively speaking)  ’go on your own journey’ . Other clients have reported that afterwards they feel amazing, that they have slept better, and that durin it just feels great, especially having someone else stretch you.

You can expect benefits for a number of days afterward and regular treatments strengthen these benefits because of the building up of  trust, knowledge and rapport. The treatments increase your ability to deal with stress, improve circulation and energy flow, promotes relaxation and taking a healthier approach in other aspects of your life and an improved sense of well-being. The massage will stretch and stimulate the whole physical body helping you to feel more balanced and positive. It expands your creativity and imagination and supports the exploration of the body that dances go through in their dance work. It feels like a treat and regular treatments will help prevent the need for more clinical treatments such as sports massage/ osteopathy  and physiotherapy.

If you have had a massage with me, I would really appreciate  your feedback on how you felt after! Simply comment on this blog.

Ballet on Briggate in Leeds!!!

September 13, 2009 by zomadic

Zomadic went into Leeds City Centre on saturday 5th September and was so excited to see Northern Ballet Theatre performing live on stage right there in the centre of leeds. They danced through the wind and ( nearly) rain excerpts from Dracula and A Christmas Carol and then the Young Dancers performed work put together by the Learning and Access department. They even had the lovely Sophie Alder from Learning and Access on hand teaching anyone and everyone a few steps on the ballet barre. My friends six year old loved it so much she joined twice ( and would have done more if we d let her) and continued to show us her ‘clie’ ( plie)and ‘rise’ over and over through the weekend. Needless to say she’s starting ballet lessons with NBT next wednesday- so that was a winner!!

Just a quick mention for the new phoenix dance company – absolutely fantastic to see such a young and athletic company – there technique and performance skills were great despite the weather and small stage…yes we loved it and look forward to seeing the whole Mixed Bill at Riley theatre in November. The choreography was by Douglas Thorpe…definitely worth coming down for!!!

More details contact Phoenix Dance or Northern school of Contemporary dance!!

Next week Yorkshire dance begins their new programme of classes – there s loads ve new stuff

Spirit of Carnival

September 3, 2009 by zomadic

Carnival came to leeds this weekend and we were there and had a fantastic time…The atmosphere all weekend was so fun and friendly…it really has been the best one for years. Best way to do carnival is to go to the queen show on the friday and then jouve morning on the bank holiday monday. That way you see all the carnival potential kings and queens in all there glory on the friday and then dance in your pyjammas on the monday to really get into the vibe and true spirit of carnival.

Queen show…..

We were stood on the back row of 700 people in a marquee in millenium square, dancin away to the soca and calypso as we watched some truly amazing costumes on stage. Most impressive was the king who won, a huge tiger – wow that man had a strong neck!!! And the tiger was so big and so impressive, wasn’t a surprise to anyone that he won first place. My favourite costume actually did not get placed and this was a japan theme with geisha symbols and very beautiful and elaborate designs.

Jouve morning is leeds’ very own tradition of getting up at 6am on bank holiday Monday and going round a mini carnival route with 2 floats and your pyjamas. This year YCC , the youth carnival committee were offering t-shirts, breakfast and orange paint to the young people ( and some not so young people!). So there we were pyjamas, orange paint and slippers. And it was great! People really got into it….young people, old people that can still party hard! babies….best costumes were the female panthers with huge afro wigs..to those girls we loved your look! Jouve was so big this year we didn’t get back til past nine.

carnival set off on time ( shock!!) and just like earlier in the day, it was a great vibe. there were so many troupes, some great costumes and dancers. Denapoli Clarke and RJC dancers danced powerfully all the way round and especially on the stage. My favourite group were Ayo Jones and her group transitions. Absolutely stunning costumes ( by mango aka Rhiann Kempadoo) that merged carribean with indian influences and Ayo Jone’s choreography really reflected this too! The dancers were so sweet and young and they danced all the way round! In fact, we were very impressed with all the troupes!

Favourite two songs of the carnival had to be ‘Trinidad!’ and ‘Wave your hands in the air’.favourite moment – getting to wear this amazing feathered head- dress- i felt like a burlesque carnival queen myself.

All things Dance…

The Dance Studio Leeds launch – August 23 rd 2009

The dance Studio Leeds is an exciting new studio that has opened just minutes from the city centre and offers the cheapest rates in town for studio hire. It offers a wide range of dance classes and workshops, as well as being used as a rehearsal space by a range of professional dance and theatre companies. And at these prices, its affordable for established companies like red Ladder theatre and emerging artists alike!

Sunday 23rd was the studio’s launch. With 7 dance workshops, half a dozen stalls and 7 performances, it was a really full day! There were workshops in everything from pole dancing to break dancing, to Aerobamartial arts fitness lead by dancer Denapoli Clarke ( of RJC dance). At five the stalls and workshops finished and the studio became the stage for some great performances. This kicked off with Helena belly dancer….a stunning and accomplished performance of veils and isolations of every inch of her body! There were other interesting performances too, including Yorksher Punjab De…an athletic and original performance. There was slick choreography from the groups Element dance and the Relentless Crew and then there were the breakdancers ! What can i say? Some of those moves just had to be seen to be believed! The launch finished off with a live band set from Chichino, and if that wasn’t enough, there was a raffle and refreshments- not bad for a sunday afternoon!

The whole day had a real community feel and i think its an exciting development for the dance scene in leeds. For more information about classes, workshops and hire costs, contact Katie Holmes on 07709 496528 or email katie@thedancestudioleeds.com

Zomadic Adventures in Thailand…

August 14, 2009 by zomadic

Zomadic recently went to a place called the Sanctuary on koh Phangaan Thailand. You arrive in a long tail boat and are immediately captivated by a stunning picturesque background of rocks, jungle, sea and sand. The energy of this place is very healing and so peaceful, you’ll never want to leave. You can do a colon cleanse at the wellness centre, read about all things cleansing from their library, you can do yoga three times a day in a hall up in the mountain right in the centre of the jungle. Nothing like that sound to really deepen your practise. You can even do pilates! You will meet business people, travellers, yogis and healers. This is the place to be if you want to recuperate, recharge or consider new ways of doing things. Here you have time to think,  relax, de-stress and a whole lot more! ( www.TheSanctuaryThailand.com)

Cleansing…

I have done this cleanse four times now. I usually do the 7 day programme which involves drinking clay/ psyllium skakes four times a day and herbal supplements 5 times a day. Then each afternoon you do a colema or self-operated colon cleanse. You do not eat at all which may seem horrifying at first glance but is such a relief for your digestive system. One of the first things I realised is how much work it is for our systems to digest because on the cleanse i had  loads of energy. The idea of the programme is to remove the mucoid plaque from the digestive system. In plainer terms, we are talking about rotting undigested matter that has been sitting in your gut for years! Results are pretty phenomenal. Your skin glows, your eyes sparkle, you feel healthier and more vibrant. You can do this to lose weight but it would only be advisable as part of a much longer programme. Its best to prepare for the cleanse properly eating raw and superfoods for a few week days to a few weeks before ( salads, wheatgrass, fruits). I would highly recommend this process and this place to do it ( though its probably not right for everybody). Even just eating the healthy salads, doing the yoga and being at the Sanctuary could be of huge detox benefit to your system. Some people can not  do the cleanse because the food is so healthy and so delicious that they can not bare to miss out!

Healing with May…

While staying in thailand i had treatments with a very gifted healer called May who is based at Bamboo Hut which is between Haad tien and Haad juan beach. You lie on the balcony overlooking the whole stunning bay of haad Juan to have your massage for a full two hours while she works deeply into your body. Sometimes its painful but as May says her teacher was nicknamed jepp di which means pain good …i think with her teacher i d have been screaming! My experiences with May were very deep and i learnt so much as a person but also as a healer. May works a lot with the emotions we are holding within our bodies and in particular what we hold in the stomach. I have found these experiences to be hugely beneficial to my body but also i actually felt the energy move through the sen lines that are worked in thai massage. May would press very deeply on my stomach and i could feel the energy move up and to the left through my heart/ chest. Other times i felt the energy move through my right hip and down through the second outside line in my right leg. It is a very detailed and loving treatment and i would highly recommend it both for May’s skills and her beautiful personality. She gives ‘metta’, loving kindness, in every treatment. Amazing!

Other gifted healers worth checking out are Zenia who does Auyervedic Yoga Massage – this is intense but really works every muscle, nerve and organ in your body, Jim who gives very powerful powerful acupuncture and Simba who can re-align every bone in your body from fingertip to spine ( you just have to try not to move for about four days after- no i’m not joking!) That being said, it is still a massage that feels amazing. You can also have life coaching, craniosacral therapy and have your blood analysed….and thats just the start of it! It is a truly amazing place where you can get away from it all. Zomadic loved it!
